Federal, Galmudug State officials criticize Puntland President’s visit to Dhinowda

Mogadishu (HOL) — Ministers and lawmakers from federal government and Galmudug State have expressed concern over Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni’s visit to Dhinowda district in Mudug region, warning it could inflame political and security tensions.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, the officials said Deni’s visit came at a sensitive time and could heighten tensions between communities living in areas claimed by both Galmudug and Puntland.

They argued that Dhinowda is part of Galmudug and accused the Puntland president of visiting the area without the consent or agreement of the Galmudug administration.

“Deni’s move was different from previous efforts to defuse tensions in Mudug region, especially the conflicts between communities living on both sides of Galkayo and its surrounding areas,” the officials said.

They said Puntland and Galmudug had previously agreed to resolve disputes and security issues through dialogue, warning that unilateral actions could undermine peace efforts.

The officials called on Deni to avoid any action that could create new tensions.

They also urged the federal government and the two regional administrations to resolve border and administrative disputes through dialogue and legal means.

Deni traveled to Dhinowda as part of a visit to eastern areas of Mudug region, where Puntland officials said he was assessing local needs.

The Puntland president described the visit as a peace mission aimed at supporting reconciliation between the Dir and Sheekhaal clans, who have been involved in conflict.

Deni said he had laid the groundwork for the two clans to reach an agreement.
