Nairobi (HOL) — Towfiq Political Party Chairman Sheikh Ahmed Shakir has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to annul the results of Galmudug State’s House of Representatives and local council elections.
Speaking at a news conference Monday, Sheikh Ahmed called on his party’s supporters to welcome the court’s decision peacefully, saying it created new hope for the Somali people.
Sheikh Ahmed also urged the Somali public to accept the ruling peacefully and avoid any actions that could lead to chaos.
He called on the armed forces and the federal government to protect public security, particularly at a time when different segments of society are calling for one-person, one-vote elections.
“Our party had spent the past eight months advocating for free and fair elections based on electoral principles and procedures,” he added.
He described the Supreme Court’s decision as confirmation of those efforts.
The Supreme Court ruled that the results of the concurrent Galmudug House of Representatives and local council elections, held on July 30, 2026, were not in accordance with Somalia’s Constitution and electoral law.
