Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia and China on Tuesday signed a 15 million Chinese yuan ($2.1 million) humanitarian assistance agreement aimed at supporting vulnerable communities affected by humanitarian crises across the country.
The agreement was signed in Mogadishu by Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Commissioner Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle and China's Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ambassador Wang reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to supporting Somalia's humanitarian response and strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
"China remains committed to continuing its support for Somalia, particularly in the areas of humanitarian assistance and broader bilateral cooperation," Wang said.
The agreement reflects the growing partnership between Somalia and China, which has expanded in recent years through cooperation in humanitarian assistance, infrastructure development, health, education and capacity-building.
Somalia continues to face one of the world's most complex humanitarian crises. Millions of people require assistance due to the combined effects of prolonged conflict, climate shocks, displacement and economic hardship, according to humanitarian agencies. International partners, including China, have continued to provide financial and material support to help address urgent humanitarian needs.
SoDMA, the federal agency responsible for coordinating disaster response and humanitarian assistance, has been working with international partners to strengthen emergency preparedness and improve the delivery of aid to vulnerable communities across the country.
