Somalia, Sudan sign diplomatic visa waiver deal to deepen ties

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia and Sudan have signed a mutual visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic passports, a move aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and facilitating closer official engagement between the two countries.

The agreement was concluded April 2 during the second session of the Somalia-Sudan Political Consultation Committee. The talks were co-chaired by Hamza Adan Haadow, permanent secretary of Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Ambassador Muawiya Osman Khalid, undersecretary of Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Under the deal, diplomats from both countries will be able to travel without visa requirements, easing official visits and diplomatic coordination.

According to a statement from Somali officials, the session focused on expanding cooperation across political, economic and educational sectors, as well as strengthening capacity-building initiatives. Both sides also discussed enhancing coordination on regional and international matters.

Somalia reaffirmed its support for Sudan’s security, stability and territorial integrity, expressing solidarity with the Sudanese people amid ongoing challenges in the country.

The agreement marks a step forward in formalizing diplomatic cooperation between Mogadishu and Khartoum, as both governments seek to reinforce regional partnerships and deepen engagement through structured political consultations.
