Jubbaland rejects outcome of national consultative meeting, accuses federal government of political interference

Thursday May 8, 2025

Kismayo (HOL) — The Jubbaland administration has strongly rejected the outcomes of the National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting concluded in Mogadishu on Wednesday, accusing the Federal Government of attempting to interfere in its internal affairs and undermine its leadership.

Jubbaland Information Minister Abdifitah Mohamed Mukhtaar dismissed the NCC's final communique, stating it failed to offer meaningful solutions and did not address the political realities in Jubbaland.

"The recommendations from the meeting add nothing new and do not change the situation in Jubbaland," said Minister Mukhtaar in a statement issued Thursday.

The NCC had called on the Federal Ministry of Interior to draft a legal framework aimed at resolving what it described as the "situation in Jubbaland," sparking backlash from regional leaders and lawmakers who view the move as a veiled attempt to replace the current administration led by President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe).

Somali MP Abdiladif Sanyare echoed the criticism, accusing the Federal Government of orchestrating a "political invasion" of the Jubbaland state and warning that it posed a serious threat to the country's fragile federal system.

"The Jubbaland state government needs to be seriously prepared. An invasion is coming from the Federal Government, which has clearly deviated from the path of federalism and is trampling on the country's unity," said MP Sanyare.

Jubbaland had previously suspended cooperation with the Federal Government, accusing it of unilateral decision-making centered in Mogadishu and failing to respect the autonomy of federal member states.

President Ahmed Madobe, who did not attend the NCC meeting, reiterated his position earlier this year that any decisions made by the Federal Government in his absence would be considered illegitimate and would not impact the governance or sovereignty of Jubbaland.

The latest developments deepen the standoff between Mogadishu and Kismayo, highlighting ongoing tensions over constitutional authority, electoral processes, and state legitimacy ahead of Somalia's 2026 elections.
