Defense Minister warns against contact with Al-Shabaab amid ongoing military operations

    Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Defense Minister Abdikadir Mohamed Nur has urged the public to avoid any interaction with Al-Shabaab as military operations intensify in the Middle Shabelle region. 

    Speaking on Sunday, Nur said some individuals in the El Bacad area were still maintaining ties with the militant group, a sign that Al-Shabaab continues to exert influence in the region. 

    The minister emphasized that recent airstrikes targeted senior Al-Shabaab operatives while ensuring minimal risk to civilians. He reiterated his call for residents to distance themselves from the group and stay away from areas where the militants are active to avoid potential harm from counterterrorism operations. 

    The Somali Cabinet also recently advised the public to exercise caution and steer clear of Al-Shabaab strongholds, warning that ongoing military offensives could pose a danger to those nearby. 

    Since last month, the federal government, with support from international partners, has conducted air and ground operations in Middle Shabelle. According to government statements, nearly 200 Al-Shabaab fighters have been killed in the campaign.
