Puntland rejects federal claims of delivering 200 tons of food aid

    Mogadishu (HOL) — Puntland authorities have denied allegations by Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) that it delivered 200 tons of food aid to Bosaso, a key port city in the semi-autonomous region.

    In a firm rebuttal, Puntland’s Minister of Relief and Disaster Management, Ubah Abdirashid Hirsi, stated that the federal government had not provided any food assistance to the region. “No aid has been received from the Federal Government of Somalia,” she said, stressing that Puntland has managed all international aid independently without federal involvement.

    Ubah called on SODMA to provide evidence to substantiate its claim, adding that Puntland remains committed to transparent and accountable aid distribution. “We ensure that any assistance provided reaches those in need through responsible and efficient management,” she asserted.

    SODMA, in a statement issued Wednesday, claimed it had delivered 200 tons of food aid to Bosaso to support vulnerable communities. The announcement was part of the agency’s broader effort to address widespread humanitarian needs nationwide, exacerbated by ongoing drought and displacement.

    The dispute spotlights the continued tensions between Puntland and the federal government over aid management. Puntland has frequently criticized what it views as federal overreach and inefficiencies, insisting on greater autonomy in handling resources destined for its population.
