Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali Federal Government forces, in coordination with the US military, conducted an airstrike in the Beerhani area of Lower Juba region, killing ten al-Shabab militants, the Somali government announced on Sunday.
The strike targeted al-Shabab members gathering approximately 35 kilometres northwest of Kismayo. According to the Somali Ministry of Information, the operation disrupted a planned attack by the militant group.
"This operation destroyed a group of Khawarij who had organized and intended to carry out a planned attack, preventing the harm they wanted to do," the ministry's statement said, using a derogatory term for al-Shabab.
The ministry added that both the Somali and US governments remain committed to eliminating the group and preventing further threats to the Somali people.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group, has continued to pose a significant security threat across Somalia, prompting increased military operations by Somali forces and their international allies.
