Mogadishu (HOL) — Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty and counter-terrorism efforts during a phone call with Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi on January 5. The discussion followed Fiqi’s December 23 visit to Cairo, where both nations outlined plans to deepen bilateral cooperation.
Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s commitment to Somalia’s unity and independence, aligning its support with international law. He pledged continued assistance to the Somali Federal Government in combating terrorism, describing it as crucial for stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. “A secure Somalia is integral to regional peace,” Abdelatty stated, underlining Egypt’s readiness to bolster Somali institutions with technical expertise and training.
Egypt’s role in Somalia extends beyond counter-terrorism. By investing in Somalia’s institutions and infrastructure, Cairo aims to foster stability and development, benefiting the broader region.
Abdelatty’s engagement with Somalia forms part of Egypt’s wider diplomatic efforts. In a separate phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on January 4, Abdelatty addressed pressing regional issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the Syrian conflict.
During the call, Abdelatty condemned Israel’s targeting of civilian infrastructure in Gaza and urged an immediate ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. On Syria, he reaffirmed Egypt’s stance on a nationally driven political transition that upholds the country’s territorial integrity.
Somalia’s position at the crossroads of critical maritime trade routes, including the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, highlights its importance to regional stability. Egypt’s collaboration with Somalia reflects a broader strategy to safeguard these trade arteries while countering extremism and fostering economic growth.
