Jubbaland Vice President meets IOM and IGAD delegation to address humanitarian and cross-border issues

Monday February 3, 2025

Kismayo (HOL) – Jubbaland’s First Vice President, Mahmoud Sayid Adan, met with an international delegation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and IGAD in the Dolow district of the Gedo region on Monday to discuss humanitarian aid, community development, and the movement of cross-border communities.

The meeting, attended by Jubbaland cabinet members and Gedo regional and Dolow district officials, focused on addressing the mobility and integration of communities living along Somalia’s borders with Kenya and Ethiopia.

Vice President Adan stressed the importance of facilitating the movement of communities, highlighting it as a crucial aspect of cross-border social and economic integration. He emphasized that improved mobility could help increase cooperation, enhance trade, and strengthen development in border regions.

Representatives from IOM and IGAD reiterated their commitment to supporting community development and ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those most in need, particularly in areas affected by conflict. They also discussed facilitating business exchanges and social cooperation as part of broader integration efforts.

The discussions come at a time when recent conflicts, including clashes between federal government forces and Jubbaland forces and ongoing Al-Shabaab attacks, have disrupted the movement of communities living near Somalia’s borders with Kenya and Ethiopia.
