Hargeisa (HOL) — Somali security forces arrested a suspect on Saturday in Harardhere after intercepting thermos flasks filled with hidden explosive devices, an official confirmed.

The suspect, identified as Abukar Iley, was detained during a routine security inspection. Authorities say the explosive-filled flasks were intended for an attack targeting civilians or security forces.

A security official in Xarardheere revealed that Iley had previously been released on bail following a prior arrest related to similar charges. “We are conducting a thorough investigation into how he acquired the explosives and any possible accomplices. Once completed, he will be brought to justice,” the official stated.

The foiled plot illustrates the ongoing threat posed by Al-Shabaab militants, who have made repeated attempts to retake Harardheere since it was liberated by government forces. The town, situated along a vital trade and transport corridor in the Mudug region, has been a key battleground in Somalia’s efforts to defeat the extremist group.

Despite losing control of Harardheere, Al-Shabaab continues to launch attacks in the region, often using hidden explosives and sleeper cells to destabilize areas under government control. Local officials warn that vigilance is critical to preventing the group’s resurgence.

Authorities have vowed to strengthen security in Harardheere by increasing patrols, tightening inspections, and improving intelligence-sharing with local communities to disrupt future plots.
