Türkiye’s Oruc Reis arrives off Somalia for seismic oil and gas survey

Friday October 25, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Türkiye’s Oruc Reis research vessel has arrived off Somalia’s coast, initiating a seven-month mission to survey for oil and natural gas potential across licensed Somali waters. Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed the arrival Friday, noting that the mission reflects Türkiye’s expanding energy partnership with East Africa.

The vessel, equipped to conduct advanced three-dimensional seismic surveys, will operate across three designated offshore zones covering approximately 5,000 square kilometres (1,931 square miles) each. The mission is part of a broader cooperation agreement, formalized earlier this year, which granted exclusive exploration rights to Türkiye’s national oil company, Turkish Petroleum, within these areas.

The seismic data gathered will be analyzed in Ankara to identify promising sites for future drilling.

The deployment of the Oruc Reis aligns with Türkiye’s broader strategy to enhance its energy footprint beyond its borders. By investing in Somali waters, Türkiye strengthens its strategic ties with Somalia and supports East Africa’s emergence as a key region for hydrocarbon exploration.
