Mogadishu (HOL) — A Somali military court has sentenced Mahmoud Abdulle Geesood, also known as "AJ," to death for the fatal shooting of Hassan Abdullahi Ahmed, who was widely known as "Qeylo."

The murder took place on February 19 in Harardheere, a town in the Mudug region. A dispute erupted at a food distribution site over the allocation of aid cards meant for displaced persons. Eyewitnesses reported that the situation escalated into a physical altercation, during which Geesood drew a firearm and shot Ahmed, resulting in his immediate death.The aid cards at the center of the conflict were part of a humanitarian effort aimed at supporting vulnerable populations in the region. The altercation reportedly began when the two men clashed over the card distribution process. According to court testimony, the situation quickly turned violent, leading to the fatal shooting.
Geesood fled the scene immediately after the shooting but was captured by security forces two months later, on April 20, 2024. The court's decision to issue a death sentence underscores the gravity of crimes committed in settings involving humanitarian aid, mainly when they result in the loss of life.
