Somali President arrives in Djibouti as Somalia prepares for ATMIS transition

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Djibouti on Sunday as part of his regional tour to visit the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) troop-contributing countries.

President Mohamud and his delegation were received at the airport by Djibouti’s Prime Minister, Abdikadir Kamil Mohamed, and other officials.

During his visit, the Somali leader is set to meet with Djibouti’s President, Ismael Omar Guelleh, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and tackling mutual interests, such as security, particularly ATMIS mission and economic cooperation.

This stop in Djibouti follows visits to Bujumbura, Burundi, and Kampala, Uganda, where President Mohamud held talks with regional leaders on security coordination, economic partnerships, and the transition from ATMIS. The meetings are part of a wider strategy to ensure a seamless shift as Somalia prepared to take full responsibility for its security from ATMIS.

ATMIS is scheduled to conclude by December 2024, and its replacement, the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), will take over in 2025. AUSSOM is expected to deploy a smaller force of around 11,000 troops, focusing on securing urban areas and critical infrastructure, while Somali forces lead national security efforts.
