IGAD calls for stronger Somali diaspora engagement at Istanbul conference

    Mogadishu (HOL) —  The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) called for greater engagement from the Somali diaspora in promoting economic growth and regional stability during the 10th International Somali Diaspora Conference in Istanbul.

    The conference brought together representatives from the Somali diaspora and international partners. 

    Speaking at the event, IGAD's Health and Social Development Director, Fathia Alwan, emphasized the critical role remittances play in sustaining economies across IGAD member states. "Migration is integral to the livelihoods of our populations. Remittances to IGAD countries totalled $6.4 billion, contributing 3% to the region's GDP," she noted.

    Alwan also noted that remittance costs to Africa remain the highest in the world, averaging 9%, and called for reducing these costs to the 3% target outlined by the Sustainable Development Goals. She highlighted IGAD's push for legal reforms that make it easier for diaspora members to send money home. The organization, in partnership with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the Swedish Government, has been working with member states to harmonize remittance laws and procedures. "We at IGAD could be leading the effort to bring down these fees, which place an undue burden on diaspora communities," Alwan added. She was representing IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu at the event.

    Since its inception in 2014, the Global Somali Diaspora (GSD), which held its first conference in Istanbul, has worked to unite Somalis abroad in efforts to contribute to the development of their homeland while addressing the needs of diaspora communities worldwide.
