Jubbaland suspends relations with federal government, calls for a consultative meeting

Thursday November 28, 2024

Kismayo (HOL) —Jubbaland administration has formally suspended relations with Somalia's federal government, citing constitutional and electoral law violations.

The decision, announced Thursday during a Council of Ministers meeting led by Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe, marks a substantial escalation in the political standoff between Kismayo and Mogadishu.

Madobe, whose re-election was recently dismissed by the federal government, called for a consultative forum with political stakeholders to discuss Somalia's state-building efforts, unity, and solidarity.

Madobe accused federal leaders of constitutional violations and escalating conflicts in Jubbaland. "The Jubbaland Government has a constitutional obligation to protect, preserve, and promote the unity and solidarity of its people," the statement read. "We call on the Somali people to prioritize peace and work towards saving the fragile statehood and state-building process."

Tensions heightened further as Somalia's federal government requested an Interpol Red Notice for Madobe's arrest. The Banadir Regional Court in Mogadishu accused the Jubbaland leader of treason, colluding with foreign governments, and threatening Somalia's unity.

Jubbaland officials dismissed the charges as politically motivated, accusing Mogadishu of exploiting judicial processes to suppress regional autonomy.
