Prominent Somali Scholar Sheikh Muse Adde passes away in the Netherlands

Wednesday December 18, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) – Renowned Somali religious scholar Sheikh Muse Nur, widely known as Sheikh Muse Adde, has passed away in the Netherlands, his son Anwar Sheikh Muse Adde confirmed on Tuesday.

The scholar had been ill recently and underwent successful surgery before his passing.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud highlighted Sheikh Muse Adde's significant contributions to Islamic teachings and Sharia studies in the Somali region. The President described the late scholar as a revered figure in Somali society, praying for his eternal abode in Jannatul Firdaws and for patience and solace for his family, fellow scholars, and the Somali people.

Sheikh Muse Adde was a prominent scholar of the Sufi tradition, deeply respected for his dedication to Islam and his knowledge. He was well-loved for his commitment to teaching the Quran and Hadith, a role he fulfilled in Mogadishu's mosques, particularly in the Sand Market area, during Somalia's central government era.

Following the collapse of Somalia's central government in 1994, Sheikh Muse Adde became the chairman of the Islamic Court established in Mogadishu by Sheikh Ali Dheere.

The late Sheikh was also among the scholars who issued a significant fatwa labeling the al-Shabab group as Khawarij—a term denoting extremist deviation—due to their actions that met the criteria of this condemnation. Other prominent Somali scholars supported this fatwa.
