Somali women's organization chair rejects government move on Mother's House Compound

Wednesday December 11, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) – The Somali National Women Organization chairperson, Batulo Sheikh Ahmed Gaballe, has strongly opposed the federal government's decision to transfer the Mother's House compound to the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Gaballe criticized the government for deploying troops to the compound in Mogadishu's Hamarweyne district the previous night, accusing Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre of orchestrating the process.

She alleged that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud authorized the controversial move and implicated the President and Prime Minister in a plan to sell the compound for personal gain. "A deal has been made with Bashir Goobe to sell the compound, and the money from it will go to the President, the Prime Minister," Gaballe claimed.

The Mother's House compound, located opposite the Somali National Theater, serves multiple functions, including hosting the National Women's Organization, Kulmiye Media, the Civil Service Commission, and a newly established section of the Ministry of Family Affairs.

Gaballe vowed that the National Women's Organization would resist the transfer and organize mass demonstrations to defend the compound. She described the government's actions as a violation of the rights and interests of Somali women.

The federal government has not yet issued a statement regarding Gaballe's accusations or clarified its intentions regarding the compound.
