Federal government accuses Jubbaland forces of attacking SNA in Raskamboni

Wednesday December 11, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali federal government has accused Jubbaland regional troops, under the command of Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe, of launching an assault on the Somali National Armed Forces (SNA) and Jubbaland Dervish stationed at forward operating bases in Raskamboni in Lower Jubba region.

In a statement by the Ministry of Defense, federal authorities stated that their forces successfully repelled the attack. However, the statement did not disclose the number of casualties on either side.

The ministry noted that federal and allied Jubbaland Dervish forces were securing recently vacated ATMIS bases in preparation for intensified regional anti-terror operations.

The federal government also accused Ahmed Madobe of colluding with al-Shabaab militants to facilitate the attack. "Ahmed's forces could not have reached Raskamboni without coordinating with al-Shabaab, as militants control the area between Ahmed's troops and SNA positions. This collaboration underscores a dangerous alliance," the ministry stated, vowing severe legal action against those involved.

Tensions have risen following the federal government's deployment of reinforcements to the region, a move Jubbaland officials see as infringing on their autonomy. Jubbaland leadership has denied federal accusations, instead claiming that federal forces initiated hostilities.

"Our forces, in their defensive operations, inflicted substantial losses on militias airlifted from Mogadishu," Jubbaland's administration countered, asserting that their troops had seized positions previously held by federal forces near Raskamboni.

The town, strategically located near the Kenyan border and vital trade routes along the Indian Ocean, has become a flashpoint in the escalating power struggle between the federal government and the semi-autonomous Jubbaland administration.
