Somali clans reach peace agreement to end deadly conflict in Gedo region

Monday August 5, 2024

Kismayo (HOL) — Three Somali clans have agreed to end a recent deadly conflict in the Luq district of the Gedo region following a series of meetings brokered by a committee tasked with ending the conflict.

The peace committee, formed to resolve the clan conflict, announced on Monday that each warring clan has been fined and will pay compensation to the families of those killed, and eight people involved in fueling the conflicts will be referred to judicial institutions.

The peace committee appointed a special committee to assess the losses incurred from burned villages and businesses. It would ensure that those who lost property are compensated and returned to their rightful ownership.

The first vice president of Jubbaland and a member of the peace committee, Mohamud Sayid Adan, stated that people responsible for burning villages and businesses would be charged to pay for the damages. He also confirmed that the tribal militias involved in the conflict are being disbanded, emphasizing only government and regional army forces are allowed to operate in the Luq district.

The conflict between the two local clan militias led to heavy fighting and the burning of villages and businesses. While the exact number of casualties remains unknown, the peace agreement marks a significant step towards regional stability.
