Puntland forces seize weapons, arrest Al-Shabaab and ISIS suspects in Bosaso

Monday August 5, 2024

Bosaso (HOL)  — The Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF), in collaboration with the Puntland Intelligence Security Agency (PISA), has seized a significant cache of weapons and explosives in Bosaso, arresting several individuals suspected of ties to terrorist networks, including both Somali nationals and foreigners.

According to a PMPF press release, the confiscated items include explosive powders, mines, hand grenades, mortars, and other related equipment. The operation marks the third major weapons seizure in Bosaso within the last three months.

While detailed information about the suspects and the specific circumstances of the seizure was not provided, this recent incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Puntland. On May 18, the PMPF also displayed illegal weapons, vehicles used for their transport, and four suspects who were reportedly smuggling these weapons into Bosaso. Earlier that month, on May 13, another suspect was presented in Bosaso, caught with explosives and identified as a terrorist.

These incidents occur amid warnings from U.S. intelligence agencies about the increasing presence of terrorist fighters, particularly ISIS, in Puntland's Bari region. The U.S. has also expressed concerns about potential links between the Houthi rebels and Al-Shabaab, which could facilitate the transfer of weapons from the Houthis to ISIS and Al-Shabaab.
