Mogadishu — The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Yusuf Hussein Jimale Madaale, along with Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Mohamed Hassan Bullale, visited the injured victims of an al-Shabab suicide attack and shooting at Mogadishu’s Liido Beach on Friday evening.
The officials visited several hospitals, receiving reports from doctors treating the wounded. They also donated blood to the victims. Mayor Madaale urged doctors and health centers to provide the best care for the affected individuals, promising that the Banadir Regional Government would support the wounded.
At least 15 people were killed and 140 others wounded in a suicide bombing and shootings at restaurants in Mogadishu’s Liido beach. The explosion occurred while people were swimming and dining at the popular beach. Hospitals in Mogadishu have appealed for blood donations due to the high number of injured.
Several people gathered at Digfer Hospital (Erdogan Hospital) in Mogadishu, where a person read the names of the wounded over a loudspeaker. Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida affiliate in East Africa, claimed responsibility for the attack through its radio station.
Security forces killed five al-Shabab attackers who stormed the beach. The group included one suicide bomber who initiated the assault. Security forces evacuated many civilians trapped in the area and safely defused an explosive-laden vehicle parked nearby.
