Somali government sends emergency medical aid to Las Anod town

Sunday May 21, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) dispatched a plane carrying emergency medical aid to the contested town of Las Anod on Sunday.

The plane will transport the medical supplies to Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland, where vehicles will transport them to the Las Anod General Hospital. The aid is intended to treat civilians injured in the ongoing prolonged four-month conflict between the Somaliland army and SCC-Khatumo forces.

On Sunday, the Somali government also invited Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn (SSC) elders to visit Mogadishu to engage in talks to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Jama Hassan Khalif, the Minister of Communications for the Federal Government of Somalia, who is currently in Las Anod, is said to have personally extended this invitation on behalf of the Federal Government. Khalif is the first federal cabinet minister to visit Las Anod.

In February of this year, eighteen people injured in the ongoing clashes between the Somaliland military and SSC-Khatumo forces in Las Anod were transported to Mogadishu for medical treatment. The victims were flown from Garowe airport.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated that the federal government is ready to participate in and facilitate a peace conference to resolve the tense situation in Las Anod town.

The town of Las Anod has become the epicentre of fierce clashes since February 6, 2023, between the forces of the breakaway region of Somaliland and local militias from the Dhulbahante clan.

These hostilities were seemingly triggered by the murder of Somaliland politician Abdifatah Hadrawi, transforming a domestic issue into a deeply-rooted political and clan dispute.
