Mortars land in recently liberated town after 60 al Shabab killed last week

Thursday May 11, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - At least six mortar shells were fired at the recently liberated town of Harardhere on Wednesday night, but no casualties were reported.

Federal government officials in the town confirmed that the mortars landed in civilian villages but did not comment on any potential casualties.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but al-Shabab usually carries out such attacks on government-controlled villages and towns, including the capital Mogadishu.

Last Thursday, the Somali National Army and local forces killed 60 al-Shabaab militants in a joint military operation that targeted militants regrouping in the area. The operation took place in El-Qabobe, about 30 kilometres south of Harardhere.

Somalia’s government-led forces captured Harardhere and the nearby town of Galcad last January in one of their most significant victories since launching an offensive against the group last year.

Harardhere was a major base for pirates hijacking merchant ships until 2011. It was later taken over by al-Shabab, which first rose up against the government in 2007 before pledging its allegiance to al-Qaeda.
