Ottawa (HOL) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Djibouti announced on Thursday that Hasna Barkat Daoud has been appointed as the new Honorary Consul of Canada in Djibouti. This news comes as the Canadian Consulate in Montreal, Quebec, is anticipated to reopen in the near future.
Daoud, a prominent figure in Djibouti's political landscape, has held various ministerial positions previously. She served as Minister of Youth, Sport, and Tourism from at least 2010 under President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh.
Additionally, Daoud has held the positions of Minister of Women and Family Planning and Minister of Relations with Parliament. In her capacity focusing on women and family planning, she hosted a United Nations Economic Commission for Africa conference on eradicating female genital mutilation in February 2014.
Daoud stepped down from both ministerial roles on May 15, 2016, and has since been practicing law in Djibouti's capital city. In 2021, she was among the top three finalists for the vice chairperson position of the African Union Commission.
