Ukrainian President promises 28,000 tons of grain to stave off famine in Somalia

Thursday September 8, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, said that his country would continue to save the world with its grain despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

According to Zelensky, 28,600 tons of Ukraine wheat will arrive in Somalia in the coming weeks due to the Russia Federation’s war against Ukraine, and the UN has predicted a famine by the end of this year.

The UN humanitarian chief has warned that parts of Somalia are on the brink of famine after being hit by four failed rainy seasons that have caused a devastating drought.

Martin Griffiths, head of the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said in a press conference in Mogadishu on Monday that "famine was at the door" and was likely to occur in south-central Somalia between October and December this year.

30 August 2022, the first shipment of grain from Ukraine to Africa since the war began has docked in Djibouti.

The bulk carrier MV Brave Commander, which carries 23,000 tonnes of grain, docked in the Horn of Africa port city on Tuesday, two weeks after leaving a Black Sea port in Ukraine.
