Famed Somali oud player Abdinasir Moalim Aideed passes away

Hargeisa (HOL) - Renowned musician and oud player Abdinasir Moalim Aideed passed away in Ethiopia after a bout with cancer.

Aideed, one of the most respected contemporary artists, began his music career in 1986 and quickly became a fan favourite, according to journalist and friend Omar Serbia.

Soon after, he was recording albums and performing in venues across Somalia.

He told friends and family that he was inspired to become a musician after watching the Danan group in 1983.

"When it comes to the songs, music, and music played by Abdinasir, they have a unique tempo and style," wrote writer Mawlid Adan Bihi Astan of his music.

According to fellow musician Boule Hubay, Abdinasir was a versatile frontman. 

"He is a musician, a vocalist, and I recorded 100 songs he wrote. He is also an author and composer, producing hits for several of today's most successful performers."

One of his most popular records, ''Sabaalo', released in October 1986, featured Ahmed Ga'ayte and Amina Abdullahi.

Born in Aden, Yemen, in 1959, Abdiaziz fell in love with music while in primary school. He took an immediate interest in the arts and 

Aideed was a member of the SNM and armed guerilla group that fought against the Siad Barre regime from the 1980s to the 1990s. During this time, artists, including Aideed used their work to express their resistance to the oppressive regime and to call for change. Aided's poetry, in particular, played a central role in the movement.

Several artists conveyed their condolences to Abdinasir, including Zeynab Ige, and Buula Hubey.
