Monday February 15, 2021

MOGADISHU (HOL) -  Somalia and the UN have launched a joint appeal for $1.09 billion to support four million Somalis who projected to face starvation this year.

The 2021 Humanitarian Response Plan seeks US$ 1.09 billion to provide life-saving assistance to 4 million people who will be in critical need of humanitarian assistance across the country this year according to a joint statement release Monday.

UN Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator Adam Abdelmoula said the combined effects of climatic shocks and disease outbreaks had plunged millions of Somalis into starvation.

“Multiple crises including erratic climate shocks, protracted conflict, disease outbreaks and a massive desert locust infestation have driven millions of children, women and men in Somalia to the brink of survival,” said  Abdelmoula.  “As a result, the UN official said, “we expect humanitarian needs to grow during 2021. Our support in ensuring availability and access to basic services such as food, shelter and health services is therefore vital.”

According to the UN, the humanitarian situation in Somalia worsened in 2020, compounded by the triple threat of floods, COVID-19 and desert locusts. In 2021, the country is projected to face more significant humanitarian challenges,” the world body added.

Drought conditions are predicted due to the likely below-average rainfall associated with La Niña, and the country will have to handle the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on the economy.

The HRP estimates that 5.9 million people will need humanitarian assistance this year, an increase from 5.2 million last year.

Humanitarian Affairs Minister Khadija Diriye said donor support should be focused on building resilience and ensuring stability noting that lifesaving assistance alone was not sufficient.

“We therefore call on donors to also prioritise programmes that tackle structural and chronic development challenges in Somalia including but not limited to protection of women and girls,” the Minister said. “We are committed to work with all partners to make lasting impact for the most vulnerable individuals and communities across the country.”
