President Trump to nominate Indian-American as ambassador to Ethiopia

President Donald Trump announced June 15, 2020, he intends to nominated an Indian-American as ambassador to Ethiopia.

If cleared by the U.S. Senate after her nomination is received, Geeta Pasi of New York, will become the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

A career Senior Foreign Service officer, Pasi is currently Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs at the State Department since October 2018.   She previously served as United States Ambassador to Chad from 2016 to 2018 and as United States Ambassador to Djibouti from 2011 to 2014.

She also served as Director of Career Development and Assignments for the State Department, and Director of the Department’s Office of East African Affairs from 2009 to 2011.

Ambassador Pasi has also served in South Asia including in India. She was Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 2006 to 2009, and Political Officer at the United States Embassy in New Delhi, India.

Since she joined the Foreign Service in 1988,  Ambassador Pasi has also served as Deputy Principal Officer at the United States Consulate General in Frankfurt, Germany from 2003 to 2006, and Political Officer at the United States Embassy in Accra, Ghana.

Her other past assignments include Afghanistan Desk Officer in the Office of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh Affairs at the State Department.

Ambassador Pasi earned her B.A. from Duke University in 1984 and her M.A. from New York University in 1986.

Before joining the Foreign Service, she worked as an Institutional ork.

She has won numerous Department of State performance awards, including the Matilde W. Sinclaire Language Award.  She speaks French, German, Hindi, Romanian, and Russian.
