In a statement Monday, Somali Disability Network (SODEN) said it was dismayed by recent remarks of General Mahad Abdirahman Aden who heads the prisons department. According to SODEN, Gen. Aden allegedly called for disabled persons to quit the service.

“He (Gen Aden) mentioned that they can be patient to old individuals with skills and instructed persons with disability to quit serving the custodial corps,” SODEN said.

Noting that the disabled persons referred to lost parts of their bodies while ‘serving the nation’ SODEN called for action against the prison’s official by President Farmaajo and Prime Minister Hassan Khaire.

“Somali Disability Network (SODEN) encourages the country’s authorities to accelerate and (sic) process of implementation of a treaty safeguarding and promoting the rights of people with disabilities as there is no existing national or legal policy framework regarding people with disabilities,” the network said.
