"The attackers were shooting at anyone on sight, and that is how I jumped into my hiding place," a survivor told Hiiran online.

The militants held people hostage for over six hours as they engaged the police in gun shots.

Internal Security minister in Kenya Dr Fred Matiang'i in a press conference said that the area had been secured by a special unit of combined officers under the command of GSU commandant.

"We are now in the final stages of mopping the area so as we take evidence," he told journalists in Nairobi, Kenya's capital.
