Security Council Extends African Mission in Somalia

The United Nations Security Council passed today the resolution 2358 that extends until March 31st, 2018, the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).

The Security Council, chaired this month by Bolivia, created this mission in 2007 to provide Somalia with support for its political process, the reform of security, the efforts to reach reconciliation and developing the State, following more than 20 years of conflict and instability.

Meanwhile, the resolution urges Amisom to boost interaction within civil society and back the fight against extreme violence.

According to the document, Somalia has key challenges, as the fight against the terrorist group Al Shabaab, amid others.

It also praises the conclusion of electoral process in Somalia and the election of Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo as President.
