Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, is currently distributing 114,000 iftar meals to those fasting in Somalia, Ethiopia and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
These meals have been donated by H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, wife of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah.
Fahd Abdul Rahman bin Sultan, Deputy Secretary-General of International Aid at ERC, praised the initiative of Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed, which comes in line with several activities of the UAE's Year of Giving. It aims to help vulnerable groups facing major humanitarian challenges in a number of countries, notably Somalia.
"The donation is also part of the "For You Somalia" campaign launched by the ERC to reduce the repercussions of famine, and contribute to providing the needs of those fasting in Ethiopia and Iraq's Kurdistan region," he said.
Sultan stressed the keenness of the ERC to achieve its noble goals through the expansion of the umbrella of beneficiaries in Somalia, Ethiopia and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He noted that it will provide 54,000 iftar meals to Somalia and 30,000 in both Ethiopia and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq during the month of Ramadan.
"We are keen to provide the best services to those fasting. These meals include the basic nutrients of the staple food of the concerned country. We have taken into account the specificity of each country in this regard," he said.
