Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday condemned "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attack on the office housing the Turkish Mission in Mogadishu, Somalia, over the weekend.

Such an attack should not deter Somalia's partners from continuing to assist the Somali Government and people, Ban's press office said in a statement.

"Turkey is an important partner of the Federal Government of Somalia and is trying under very difficult circumstances to assist the people of the country in their efforts to achieve peace, stability and development.

"Terrorist attacks of this nature should not deter Somalia's partners or weaken their resolve to stand by the people and Government of Somalia as they work courageously to build peace in their country," the statement said.

Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack which killed one Turkish security officer and a Somali student, and injured three Turkish personnel.  The Security Council later condemned "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attack on the Turkish embassy in Mogadishu, and reaffirmed its continued support for the political process and for peace and stability in Somalia.

In a press statement issued by its President, the US, the Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to peace and security, that it is "criminal and unjustifiable" regardless of the motivations, whenever and by whomsoever committed, and needs to be combated by all means.

Underlying the need to bring the perpetrators of this act of terrorism to justice, the Council recalled the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and the obligations on host Governments, under various Conventions, to take all appropriate steps to protect them and to prevent any attack on their personnel.
