The Kenya Defense Forces have set up satellite surveillance systems along Kiiwayu Island and within the Kenya-Somali border to detect any suspected al Shabaab insurgents attempting to cross the border. This follows reports that there were some suspected al Shabaab militias fleeing for safety in the area. Sources told the Star that the suspects posed as Kenyans and were allegedly being harbored by locals.

Reports also indicted that the suspects who are among those fearing the KDF invasion in Somalia came into the country secretly at night to seek refuge in ‘safety zones. Security officials said the Entire Kenya Somali Border was under strict surveliance and being monitored by the Military. They said the routes would be monitored from the Kenya Navy base at Manda Island which had highly sophisticated satellite gadgets both from an aerial and the sea with a capacity of monitoring the entire border line. Lamu East Deputy Police Boss Julius Melly said more police officers had been deployed in the area and along the Kenya Somalia border to avert any attacks by Terror gangs allegedly linked with Alshabab members.
