AUBURN - A fashion show featuring outfits worn by Somali women will be held Friday, May 16.

One goal of the "Fashions from the Horn of Africa" is to help bridge understanding and cultures in the community.

The show will feature 11 models who are students at Edward Little or Lewiston high schools. Each will do two changes, which will range from traditional to modern to feminine special-occasion outfits worn at weddings.

The teens will explain what they wear and how the Somali culture and their Muslim religion are connected. While Western women often use fashion to show off their figures, Muslim women believe in modesty. They wear skirts and hijabs (head covering), but colors and styles differ according to the individual and occasion.

At the end of the show, the models will perform a traditional dance, "the Dhaanto," done at Somali weddings.

Suggested donations of $2 to $5 will be accepted at the door. Proceeds will benefit the United Somali Women of Maine, a local nonprofit organization that helps immigrant women in Lewiston-Auburn.

For more information, e-mail [email protected], or call Cara Gaumont at 753-6676. Gaumont is the outreach coordinator with the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, a partner in the event.

The show is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to last an hour.

The arts center is on South Main, Academy and High streets. Parking is limited, but can be found around the center.
