Nearly two weeks ago, most of the country was under the control of the Union of Islamic Courts or U-I-C. Some thought they were the country's best hope for stability. Others, especially Ethiopia, saw them as Somalia's version of the Taliban prompting Ethiopia to send its troops cross the border on Christmas Eve, routing the Islamists by New Year's Eve.
Now, alleged Islamist fighters fleeing across the border into Kenya are being detained including one, or possibly two claiming to be Canadian citizens. Here in Canada, Somali ex-pats are watching the events, concerned about friends and family caught in the middle. Not everyone is so hopeful about where Somalia is headed. Salim Lone was a spokesperson for the United Nations' mission in Iraq until August, 2003. He's now a columnist for the Kenyan Newspaper, The Daily Nation and he was in Nairobi this morning.
